Pet insurance

If you have pets, it may be worth getting pet insurance, which will cover vets bills in the event that your pet is ill or needs an operation. Vets bills can quickly mount up if an animal is sick, so you need to be sure you would be able to pay if your pet needed treatment.

You can get relatively basic cover for vet treatment, more comprehensive policies may cover the cost of any damage caused by your pet (furniture chewed by the new puppy or damage to fences by horses, for example) as well as paying for pet care from a kennel or cattery if you were suddenly taken into hospital.

At a glance:

  • Covers the cost of vets bills for illness or accident
  • Doesn't cover routine appointments for things like vaccinations, nail clipping or neutering
  • May cover the cost of damage caused by pets (including damage to your furniture)

Some policies cover you to advertise if your pet is lost so check for this if your cat is prone to wandering
