Health and medical cover

Private medical insurance

Private medical insurance (PMI) covers the cost of medical treatment for a range of complaints ranging from routine treatments to more serious operations and treatment by specialists. If you're a UK resident, you're entitled to treatment under the NHS, but having a private medical policy may enable you to be seen quicker and at a private hospital of your choosing. You will usually have to complete a medical questionnaire or undergo a medical examination before cover starts, as existing conditions may be excluded from the policy.

At a glance:

  • Covers medical treatment outside of the NHS
  • Allows you to be seen quickly
  • May be provided free or discounted through your employer
