Things to consider when choosing a bank account

As you will have seen, there are lots of different accounts available; each will have different features depending on the type of account and the bank or building society. The main question you need to ask before choosing an account is, what do I want it for? If its an everyday account where you can pay bills and access your money when you want, you should consider a current or basic account. If you want your money to work a bit harder and don't want to withdraw it on a regular basis, look at a savings account.

Here are a few other things to consider when you're comparing bank accounts:

  • Will you need to access the money easily and frequently?
  • Do you need to be able to set up regular payments in or out of the account?
  • Do you want to be able to bank by phone or online?
  • Are you looking for somewhere to put your excess cash (savings) or somewhere for your everyday banking?
  • Do you want a debit card?
  • Do you want an overdraft facility?
  • Can you pay a set regular amount in each month (for savings)?

Answering these questions will enable you, and your bank to narrow down the type of account that will be suitable for you.
